Let's take action

It was about time ! Schools have typically been rather poor examples in terms of environmental and social impact. More than 4300 students per year means a high use of paper, heating and lighting classrooms, etc.

Over the past four years, Euromed Management has implemented a process that today makes us proud of the work accomplished, although we are aware that much remains to be undertaken. In order for progress to be effective, it is important that the project involves the students, administrative staff and faculty staff. Last March, a survey was carried out on the expectations of the different parties concerned regarding Sustainable Development, thus providing us with a review of the situation. Following the survey, Agenda 21, a programme of measures in favour of Sustainable Development in the 21st Century is being prepared, with the objective of ensuring coherence of all measures taken by the School in this respect. Here are some of the points that are being addressed:

Objectives set for Euromed Management's Agenda 21 programme

Overall objective

100 % of students, faculty staff, and administrative and technical personnel should be informed regarding Sustainable Development and Global Compact. This will be achieved through awareness-enhancing events organised as part of the School's positioning, its commitment with respect to Global Compact and its member status within the French "Comit? 21".
The Sustainable Development Campus student project will also inform students: weekly emails with mascot D?D? giving eco-tips, theme events, exhibitions and distribution of info-guides published by ADEME, such as "Le petit Livre Vert pour la Terre".

Creation of a network federating companies and institutions around the values promoted by Global Compact, "Comit? 21" and Sustainable Development. On 14th February 2006, Euromed Management held a first meeting with companies from the region and a representative of UNO. The companies expressed their interest in having Euromed Management coordinate a network federating companies and institutions around the values promoted by Global Compact and Sustainable Development.

On 1st June, a second meeting was organised in order to evaluate and address the problems encountered by companies when implementing measures concerning Sustainable Development. Anne-Marie Sacquet, Director of "Comit? 21", Jean-Pierre Bugada representing UNO, Pascale Tabakian of the Strategy and Sustainable Development Agency, as well as representatives of ADEME, DRIRE and ONUDI, attended the event and answered questions from companies that were present at the meeting (FRANCE TELECOM, Caisse d??xEpargne, ONET, Gemplus, Prado Epargne, etc.).
This day-event and the different awareness-enhancing actions (exhibitions, distribution of info-guides, etc.) were organised as part of the French national week for Sustainable Development, and was among the TOP 100 projects in this domain.

Environmental objectives agreed on with the parties concerned at Euromed Management

Selective sorting:

  • Achieve 100collection of paper via selective sorting within one year.
The Sustainable Development Campus student project has recycled more than 4 tonnes of paper within one year. As Euromed Management buys 4.5 tonnes of paper per year, placing specific recycling bins in every classroom will encourage selective sorting.

  • Collection of 100 % of wasted glass, via selective sorting of glass within one year - Sustainable Campus has installed a bin for recycling glass.

  • Collection of 50 % of packaging, via selective sorting of packaging within one year.
Sustainable Campus has installed a recycling bin to this effect. The Students Office and the Students Hall have adopted selective sorting. A more efficient system needs to be implemented with bins featuring separate compartments.

  • Collection of 100of used ink cartridges.
For several years now, Euromed Management has been working with the association Microcolt. A special recycling bin has been installed for the associations so that students may recycle their waste. This partnership aims to encourage the professional insertion of the disabled and the underprivileged.

Energy Savings:

  • Reduce energy consumption by X % within the next two years.
Euromed Management has already installed an air-conditioning system (30 enabling better control of energy consumption.
Euromed Management is also using a maximum of energy-saving light bulbs, and a radar system has been installed in order to detect human presence, thereby avoiding wasting energy.
Several photocopying machines carry the Energy Star label; this type of equipment will be preferred for future purchases.

  • Reduce water consumption by X % within the next year.
Before September 2006, Euromed Management will be fully equipped with double tank toilet flushes.

  • Reduce paper consumption by 15 % within the next year.
Since last year, paper consumption has increased by 15 %. The objective for next year is to bring this level back to that of last year.
Paper is progressively being replaced by electronic means. Administrative information (schedules, notes, syllabuses, etc.) is communicated entirely and only via email and Internet based systems. An increasing number of courses rely on the use of the Internet.

Renewable energies:

  • Reduce recourse to non-renewable energies.  Within the context of the Solar Generation campaign initiated by Greenpeace, Euromed Management has served as Pilot Green Campus since December 2005. The Sustainable Campus project aims to install solar panels on the roofs of the buildings at Euromed Management.

Consumption of recycled or biodegradable paper and materials:

  • Increase the use of recycled paper by 50 % within the next 2 years. Since December 2005, recycled paper is available at Euromed Management upon request. The School's associations have already adopted this solution following the initiative of Unis-Terre, an association focusing on Humanitarian actions and Sustainable Development at Euromed Management.

Social objectives :

Students can choose to take optional courses related to Sustainable Development in the following fields:
Reduce the environmental impact of the School in terms of transportation with the help of the "Maison des Transports", an association promoting sustainable mobility, which is based at the Luminy campus.

  • Law and regulations as applied to the environment,

  • Social entrepreneurship,

  • Sustainable Development and corporate social responsibility,

  • Alternative marketing,

  • Finance, governance and Sustainable Development,

  • Humanitarian project management,

  • Health for Social and Personal Development, etc.

They can also attend international seminars on these different issues. Extensive research work is carried out on themes concerning Sustainable Development. Many conferences are also proposed on this topic.
The PRO-ACT student projects often pursue a social or humanitarian goal. Some promote equitable trade; others follow voluntary work and assistance to underprivileged persons. The proceeds of events organised at or by Euromed Management are regularly for the benefit of NGOs.

Social commitment :

  • 100 % access to persons with reduced mobility
Some additional work is required in order to ensure access to all buildings for persons with reduced mobility.

  • Promotion of human diversity:
Within one year: Develop external communication with respect to the financing possibilities available for apprenticeship-type studies.
Euromed Management wants to communicate more on the accessibility of its programmes to underprivileged persons.
Increase the number of apprenticeship students by 20 in the ESC programme within the next two years.

Apprenticeship is an excellent way of diversifying a curriculum as the students' profiles are very different. Promoting access to Management Schools for populations who do not have the resources to pay for costly education programmes is also part of the social objective ensuring equal opportunity.
Increase by 30 % the number of internships on offer in the sector of Solidarity Economy within one year.
